▶ Watch Wes explain it in two minutesI spent 35 years as a locksmith and handyman in other folks' houses. I've cracked open the expensive power boxes and built the cheap, ugly ones on my own kitchen table. This is the whole method, written down: 810 pages on one warm room, a battery you can lift, and the exact parts, sizes and fuses for your fridge, freezer and medical gear, for a few hundred dollars.
The manual keeps the house warm and powered. The kitchen book keeps you fed and the water running. Most folks take both.
Less than buying the two apart.

Every winter it's the same two roads. One road is the generator salesman and the power-station ads: thousands of dollars, a gas can, a transfer switch, a box too heavy to lift. The other road is the internet: twenty-minute videos with “free heat” in the title that never show you the parts, the sizes or the fuse.
Meanwhile the lights go out more than they used to. And for a lot of us the stakes aren't comfort. It's a CPAP at three in the morning, an oxygen concentrator, insulin in the fridge, a pipe in the north wall, a freezer full of meat that took a year to fill.
That's how long the average American electricity customer went without power in 2024, nearly twice the average of the ten years before. U.S. Energy Information Administration, Electric Power Annual 2024.
Nothing heats for free, and I won't pretend it does. But most of what keeps a house alive in an outage is cheap, if somebody shows you the parts.
Left: what the market sells and what the government says you lose. Right: what the manual has you put together, a room and a battery at a time.
Sources: generator and transfer-switch costs from the Angi installation cost guide; power station price as listed on 4patriots.com (Solar Generator 2200X & panel, Nov 2026); food times from USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service outage guidance. Your home and prices will differ. The manual's Parts & Shopping Sheet lists every part with its store and 2026 price.
One part saved from the wrong purchase pays for the book.
Every home is different. Tap the ones that matter to you, and see where the manual handles each one.
Whatever you ticked, it's in there, with the parts list and the sizes.
Read it like a breaker panel: one circuit at a time. Ninety chapters, each with the parts, the 2026 prices, the step by step and the honest limits.
Stop heating a whole house you can't heat. Pick one room and win.
The heat sources that are safe indoors, what they cost, and what they really warm.
How big, which kind, how many, and how to never hurt your back.
The parts that turn a battery into a wall outlet, sized and fused safely.
From your car, a small generator or the winter sun.
Keep the food cold for days on a few hundred dollars.
The most important power in the house. Planned, sized and checked with your doctor.
Safe light, charged phones and a working radio for pennies.
Care, fuel and placement so it runs when the storm hits.
Carbon monoxide, fire, frozen pipes and the plan for day 14.

No guessing which brick goes where. Every build has a parts list, a drawing with labels and a photo of the finished thing. The type is big on purpose.

Part 3The battery cart you roll, never lift

Part 3The two-line battery math, on one card

Part 4The fuse that saves your house, and where it goes

Part 1The blanket doorway, done right

Part 2The brick heater, with what it really gives off
A photo or a labeled drawing for every build.
Parts lists, sizes and 2026 prices in boxes you can find again in the dark.
Yes. For every build. Each one lists the parts, the store (Harbor Freight, Walmart, Tractor Supply, the hardware store) and the 2026 price, then the steps in order. And the Parts & Shopping Sheet puts all of it on a few pages you can carry into the store.
Part Ten and the First-Night Road Map walk you through it in time order, so nobody's guessing in the dark.
Close off the warm room, check the medical gear, keep the freezer shut, find the lights.
The heater rules, the CO alarm, the CPAP on the battery, the fridge on its first shift.
The charging schedule, the food order, the pipes, the check-in calls.
When to stay, when to go, and what to do when the power comes back.

This video is what I needed. Been stumped for a while on designing a home backup battery system that can power the 4-5 important things during an extended power outage, and maybe everything for 100% off grid living just in case.
This is a well thought out video full of practical, tried & tested advice. I like the clear presentation with pictures showing exactly what you mean. Do you really prefer those old lead batteries over the newer, lighter but pricier, lithium ones? You mention those lovely old kerosene lanterns but not candles. Why?
A BLUETTI APEX 300. But I will definitely be exploring the rig you have explained. Im pretty handy and you've given me the confidence to possibly build one myself. Thanks for sharing
Added benefit of building... If one part fails, you can replace that one part and everything else is still good. If one part of the off-the-shelf box fails.. you can basically brick the whole thing.
I use a Dutch oven on three legs. This absolutely works. Improvise... I use soybean food grade oil. Relatively cheap and surprisingly clean burning: 2nd only to very expensive olive oil as to clean burning...
Nice overview video and good information, God bless.
WOW! THANK YOU 💯 %
Lead or lithium, candles or lanterns, how many batteries: the questions you ask under the videos are the chapters of this book.
I spent 35 years as a locksmith and a handyman. That's a lot of front doors, a lot of basements, a lot of furnaces that quit on the coldest night of the year. You learn what a house does when the power goes. You learn it from the people standing in their kitchens in their coats.
Some of the worst calls came after. When a house burns, somebody has to secure what's left of it. Every space heater fire I ever walked through afterward started with something sitting too close to it. That's why the safety rules in this book sit right next to every heater, not in a chapter at the back.
In 1997 I was in Lewistown, Montana, rekeying a man's shop, and what kept that shop warm is in this book. In 2019 I changed Inga's locks when she sold her place, and she handed me ten bricks in a milk crate. I've built that heater on them every winter since.
I've cracked open the expensive power boxes to see what's inside, and I've built the cheap, ugly ones on my own kitchen table. The cheap ones work, if they're sized right and fused right. That's the part nobody puts in a video.
So I wrote it all down. Not for the fellow with a $5,000 generator in the side yard. For the widow up the mountain road, the couple on a fixed income, the man with a CPAP on the nightstand. I'm no electrician and I won't pretend to be. I'm the handyman who's been in the house.

Yes. Most of the book is closing off a room, hanging a blanket, plugging in the right box and knowing the rules. The battery setups roll on a cart; you never lift a heavy battery. Where a step needs strong hands or a licensed electrician, the book says so, and says what to ask for.
You click the button, pay on a secure checkout page (I never see your card number), and the book opens on the next screen. The same link lands in your email, so you can open it again any time on a phone, tablet or computer. Nothing ships and there's no account to make. Lose it? Write to me and I'll send it again.
Part Seven shows you how to find what your machine really draws, how big a battery and inverter it needs for a whole night, and how to set up a second way to power it. It also starts with calling your doctor, your supplier and your power company before winter. A plan like this is a backup, never a replacement for your supplier's emergency plan.
Very much. Parts Three and Five show you how long yours will really run your fridge or CPAP, and how to recharge it from your car, a small generator or winter sun when the grid's been down for days.
No. Nothing heats for free. The book tells you what each heater burns, what it costs to run, what it really warms and what it gives off, including the old tricks from the videos, with their honest limits.
Not for the plug-in setups: battery, inverter, fuse, a heavy-duty cord to the appliance. You should never connect anything to your house wiring without a licensed electrician and a proper transfer switch, and the book explains why.
Yes, and a lot of folks do. Buy it with your email, then forward it or print the parts that matter. The fill-in sheets are made to be printed and taped inside a cupboard door.
It's a PDF you get by email, so you have it tonight. You can print any page at home or at the library. Nothing is posted to you.
Then email within 30 days and you get your money back, every penny. I'd rather you keep your money than keep a book you don't use.
When the ice storm is on the news, the inverters and the propane are gone off the shelves by noon. One afternoon now, with the parts list in your hand, and the next outage is a long night in a warm room instead of a scramble.
